In 1985, an eleven-year-old boy, David Hartman, disappears. Five years later, Mary Townsend, a sixteen-year-old high school pupil and talented young artist, commits suicide. No note is left, no reason given. But when another pupil takes their own life, Mary’s old friends must reunite to figure out what happened to the Hartman boy all those years ago, before they too share Mary’s fate. Meanwhile, shaken by the death of his star pupil, the ageing Art teacher, Mr Ermey, is rapidly losing his grip on reality. Paul Roscoe’s debut novel is a supernatural and psychological mystery about young adults struggling to uncover the truth behind long buried secrets. But in Bracton, a small town set in England’s North West, nothing is as it seems, and the truth they seek threatens their very existence. On the journey to Mr Ermey’s Funeral, disappearing is easy.

This book offers a great deal more than the description alone might suggest. Yes, there is a mystery. Yes, there are supernatural elements. And especially yes, we follow our four protagonists through a lot of the agony, (with a small "a"), of the teenage years. But, there is also a philosophical element, a running puckish commentary on the nature of reality, and an almost mathematical rigor to the most speculative aspects of the story. This is a talk-about-it and think-about-it novel. It's a combination of small carefully observed moments and big ideas. It can be full of dread, gloom and grey foreboding, but then the sun comes out and the characters breathe freely for a while.
I'm being coy because any attempt to address the plot would introduce way too much opportunity for SPOILING. The important element here is not so much the destination as the journey. Dialogue is sharp; characters are fully developed; the main themes are driven home forcefully, and yet everything is wrapped up in a mood, an atmosphere, that is suspenseful and menacing.
So, if you want "to see the darkness of another world through the cracks in this one" you might want to give this book a try. Just don't slip.

Mr Ermey Funeral Paul Roscoe 9781479279159 Books Reviews
One of the things that keeps me downloading freebies is the hope of discovering an enjoyable new-to-me author/book. "Mr. Ermey's Funeral" is my reward for persevering in this endeavor.
I was totally fascinated by this book and enjoyed its themes Guilt. Teenage Angst. Life/Death. Regret. The Afterlife. Art...and Birds.
To reveal too much of the storyline would definitely require a spoiler alert which I prefer to avoid. At times there is a dizzying timeline that takes the reader backward and forward both in memory and time. Initially it is a bit difficult to keep the characters and their love interests straight, but clarity evolved.
One of the pleasant surprises was that it was almost typo-free...(only a "laid" for "lay" and "where" for "were").
Overall the book was an unexpected pleasure with just enough weirdness to keep me wondering where all this was leading. I shall keep an eye out for future Paul Roscoe works.
Fans of the surreal and the slow burn will love this book. The whole novel is steeped in gradually building dread. I can promise you'll never see the end coming but it is so meticulously thought out, the whole book is so detail oriented that the conclusion is fitting and satisfying. The language and imagery in this story are extremely beautiful (or often extremely ugly) and very vivid- the author really works at truly immersing you in this world all while making it seem effortless. The details are important but not obtrusive and don't drag the pace down.
